The Timing Mistakes Costing Restaurants Customers
When you send the email and when you ask for the review can make all the difference.

Hi,

Welcome to today's Restaurant Owner Intel.

Today, I’m looking at two small timing decisions that can have a surprisingly big effect on restaurant marketing.

First, when should you actually email customers about a midweek offer? Sending the message on the day might already be too late if customers have made other plans.

Then, we look at the best time to ask for a review. The moment you ask can make the difference between a customer intending to leave one and actually doing it.

Both articles come back to the same principle: good marketing isn’t only about what you ask customers to do. When you ask matters too.

Hope you find them useful.

Many restaurants see disappointing results from midweek promotional emails, but often the problem isn’t the offer or message - it’s timing.

Customers typically decide dinner plans well before restaurants send their reminders, like a Wednesday 2pm email for a Wednesday night special.

If marketing arrives after people have made other commitments, it struggles to sway them, no matter how tempting the deal.

By working backwards from when customers actually make decisions - often days in advance - restaurants can shift their approach.

Sending one anticipatory email early in the week, then a concise reminder before service, meets diners at each stage of planning.

Aligning messages with decision windows, not just service times, leads to better engagement.

Consistent timing helps customers anticipate occasions and can eventually build dining out into their weekly routine, boosting bookings without bigger discounts.

Getting customer reviews is crucial for local restaurants, but timing is everything.

Asking for feedback right after a positive dining experience, such as immediately after a compliment or at the end of a successful meal, dramatically increases the chance customers will actually leave a review.

If you wait too long, enthusiasm fades and reviews become unlikely.

It's best to keep requests friendly and organic - review reminders work well during natural moments, like when a regular says they'll return or after a staff member resolves an issue well.

The process must be simple, with direct links or QR codes that remove obstacles for the customer.

Never pressure unhappy guests or ask at the wrong time.

Building reviews into daily service, not just when ratings drop, transforms customer satisfaction into lasting social proof and richer feedback for your business.

Empower your team to recognize and act on these high-satisfaction moments - your reputation will steadily grow.
